Prime Minister of Georgia



40 (born on October 22, 1964 in Kobuleti) and former Minister of Finance, Zurab Nogaideli was appointed as Prime Minister of Georgia on February 8, 2005 by president Mikhail Saakashvili. He is thus succeeding Zurab Zhvania, who died on last February 3rd.

Physician-mathematician, Nogaideli started his political career with Zurab Zhvania in the Greens party, at the beginning of the 90s. From 1992 to 1999, he is a deputy of the Georgian Parliament. From 1992 to 1995, he chairs the Parliamentary Commission for the protection of the environment and natural ressources. From 1999 to 2000, he chairs the Parliamentary Commission on tax and incomes. From 1996 to 1997, he is also a member of the Supreme Court of the autonomous Republic of Ajaria ( Nogaideli had studied Sciences, and started his career as physician in the Ajarian capital, Batumi).

From 2000 to 2002, he is the Minister of Finance, under president Eduard Shevarnadze. From 2002 to 2003, he is a member of the advising council to the People's Bank. From April 2003 to November 2003, he is the c-founder and co-director of DVNK (standing for Damenia, Varshalomidze, Noghaideli and Kavtaradze), an auditing and consulting company.

After the Rose Revolution which brought to power president Saakashvili, Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania forms his government and leaves him at the position of Minister of Finance, in February 2004. Since Zurab Zhvania's death, on February 3rd 2005, the local press was presenting him as the possible new Prime Minister for he had good relationships with Zurab Zhvania.
